  • The Bazaar Was Wonderful!

We started with 16 vendors only at 8:00 am, and at 9:00 am the shopping began! You could choose from books signed by the author, candles, soap, greeting cards, whiskey jugs, rocks, jewelry, Christmas décor, pillows, placemats, wellness products, and so much more! Free coffee was provided thanks to the generosity of Montana Coffee Traders. A free homemade bowl of chili was offered to each vendor, so they had no need go hungry. It was a fun day, with lots of laughter and smiles. Christmas music played in the background and the sun shone brightly outside. What more could you ask for? If you missed the 3rd annual, be sure to come see us next year. We will announce the date in the November 2018 newsletter.

  • Cancellation Alert!

Activities will be discontinued at the Center until December 11 due to the remodel that is currently underway. This includes all classes, game days, and congregate meals served at the Center except for Tuesday yoga, which will continue (they agreed to using porta potties). Our restrooms are being updated and our front door is being reconfigured to meet ADA standards. We are also installing a new water heater, which means that we will be without hot water some days and without ANY water on others. Meals on Wheels will continue. Volunteers who help in the kitchen and drivers who deliver meals will not be impacted by the construction. Clients may receive a frozen meal for the one or two days when we have no water in the building. Site Managers will be there daily to answer phones and supervise Meals on Wheels. Construction to our west is not part of our remodel project. It is a new three-story, mixed-use building housing residential and commercial spaces.

  • It's a birthday party!

We will gather on July 16 at noon to celebrate our July birthdays and to celebrate, in general, anyone who appreciates a party! There will be cake (or cheesecake or pie or cupcakes). As always, if you wish to join us for lunch, please make a reservation by calling 862-4923 at least one day ahead. Our menu will be Sloppy Joes on wholegrain bun, buttered corn, potato wedges, and dessert. This month’s party falls on a Monday, usually a very quiet day at the Center. Let’s make this a Monday Funday. Don’t be shy! Come spend some time with us. The more the merrier!

  • We have a new game!

We have a new, fun game for you to try. It is called Mexican Train and is being hosted by Celia Chambers and Val Talbot. They say the game is really fun. They also say that they are happy to teach beginners and it is easy to learn. Mexican Train actually has nothing to do with the term Mexican or train. It is a variation of dominos. We have two set-ups at the Center, so eight people can easily play. As with our other Tuesday games, we start at 1:00 and usually go until 4:00. Call if you have questions (862-4923) or just drop by!

  • Lunch and a Movie

Beginning Monday October 30, our community center will feature a monthly "Lunch and Movie Magic" for an affordable $5.00 per person. This activity will fall on the LAST MONDAY of each month. Join us for a wonderful meal, then stay to enjoy a matinee while digging into movie house candy. Call the center at 406-862-4923 to find out the name of the DVD of the month and the lunch selection for the day. We have a fine collection of films that you can enjoy from 12:30 noon to 2:00 pm, and there’s an alphabetical list posted on the DVD cabinet near the television. There is also an available wish list for those of you who would like to view a favorite movie. See Kathy or Kim for additional details!

  • More Yoga!

We are thrilled to announce that WCC will be offering Tuesday evening yoga, starting October 3. Our current (& wonderful) instructor, Betty Kuropat, will continue her Tuesday morning sessions at 9:30 am. Then she will turn around and come back for evening sessions starting at 5:30 pm. We know that a lot of you work or have other important obligations during the day. This is designed just for you! Not an early bird? Come join us in the evening. Evenings will be Hatha Yoga, slightly different and slightly more challenging than the gentle morning class. One evening a month (usually the last Tuesday) will be Restorative Yoga. This consists of relaxing poses using “props” such as blankets, firm pillows, and foam blocks to support our bodies. Both styles are suitable for beginners with the modifications and instruction that Betty can provide. We hope you are as excited as we are about this new offering. If you have questions, call 862-4923. No sign-up is necessary. Bring a mat or strap if you have it. No yoga equipment? No problem. Just come on down and we will take care of your needs.

  • August Trip to Big Mountain

Despite the smoke from multiple forest fires, a group of 12 brave souls took the gondola to the top Big Mountain on August 16. The air at the top was easy to breathe, however the smoke did put a damper on any scenic photos. We lunched, we wandered, we chatted, we picked huckleberries, and then we took the tram back down the hill. It turned out to be a delightful day, and we hope to make this an annual trek.

  • Lunch in the Park

Kay Beller Park was rockin’ on July 29 for our Lunch in the Park. We were entertained by the Calamity Singers and our fun-loving MC, Christie, assisted by her sister, Kelly. Tony was our DJ and equipment expert. The local Subway provided scrumptious box lunches. Our very special guest was singer and guitar player Kathy Sullivan. In addition, site manager Kim Baker honored us with her rendition of the song “Smile”. We found or created enough shade for all our guests. Many thanks to WCC member Bambi Goodman and the Flathead Valley Spay & Neuter Clinic for allowing us to use their vaulted carport canopy! The "Silent Auction" and "Let's Make a Deal" games offered many prizes, ranging from candy to a small Hibachi BBQ. Excitement was really in the air when we pulled the raffle ticket that won the 42” plasma TV! Our sincere thanks to all those who helped make this event a success. The pictures tell the story best!

  • The WCC Board of Directors Listens to YOU!

Whitefish Community Center has a board of directors whose members volunteer their time, attention, and follow-through on behalf of the 200 members who pay an annual fee of $10.00. Board members meet once each month throughout the year to discuss and vote on the affairs of the Center. The board of directors is the governing body of a nonprofit. Individuals who sit on the board are responsible for overseeing the organization's activities. Every WCC member has a “golden” opportunity to speak privately to a board member about his or her concerns and/or suggestions. With your guidance and knowledge, the board can improve, modernize and ENERGIZE the Center. Do you have an idea for a weekly activity that will attract new members? Do you have suggestions on how to “spiff up” the Center or know of someone who would donate outdoor plants, bushes, flowers or sitting benches to the Center? Are there specific movies you wish to add to our shopping list for the new DVD player? Romance, travel, historical, comedy, musicals? Board members will share your views, concerns, even complaints, at their roundtable discussions. In this manner, your voice will be heard. Don’t hesitate to speak up!

  • Whitefish City Manager Visits WCC

Adam Hammatt recently came to Whitefish Community Center to meet with several WCC Board members. It was his first visit and lasted forty-five minutes, during which he enjoyed a “nickel tour” and meeting our long-time site manager Kathy Cozad. Adam moved to Whitefish from Wisconsin to start his new position as City Manager in March of this year. He was born and raised in Great Falls, and family members remain in that area. He is the father of five children, ranging in age from 5 to 22. The eldest daughter is due to be married in August. Adam has also served as an EMT/safety officer for St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula and as a firefighter/paramedic for Great Falls Fire Rescue. Adam is well versed in policy and spoke eloquently of issues faced by the City of Whitefish. He knows a little about everything, including affordable housing, Baker Street ingress and egress, and doughnuts (not the ones found at Krispy Kreme). He said a goal high on his list of priorities is improving the city’s relationship with Flathead County, whose leaders often have their own vision of growth in Whitefish. He has offered to come back to WCC to speak to members about their own concerns. For those of you who wish to continue the conversation, Adam may be reached as follows: Adam M. Hammatt, City Manager City of Whitefish P.O. Box 158 418 E 2nd Street Whitefish, MT 59937-0158 ahammatt@cityofwhitefish.org
