History of the Whitefish Community Center

In August 1974, a few local citizens saw the need for an organization to address the challenges facing Senior Citizens in the Whitefish area.  An article ran in the local paper, announcing a meeting for those over 55 years of age who are interested in forming a Senior Citizens group. 54 people attended the first meeting on August 7, 1974 and the Whitefish Golden Agers was born. The “Golden Agers” organization was established to define problems faced by Seniors and advocate solutions to those problems as well as provide recreational activities for the Whitefish Senior population. For the first two years the Golden Agers rented space in a building in downtown Whitefish.

They soon wanted a building of their own and in June 1976 they broke ground on what is now the Whitefish Community Center, it was completed in September 1976. It became the home to many social events and hosted health screenings vital to the well-being of our Senior population.  Within 2 years the Golden Agers out grew the center, and an addition was added in 1978.

In 2010 we officially changed the name of our organization from the Whitefish Golden Agers to the Whitefish Community Center.

Today we still provide & facilitate vital services to the Whitefish community such as congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, social activities and health & exercise programs.
